Job Description

Sonoco has established a structured hourly supervisor developmental program to evaluate and develop candidates for future salaried supervisor openings. This program is an opportunity for high-potential hourly employees to develop skills related to supervision and management.

The Shift Lead will lead their team in meeting the core expectations of demonstrating a good work ethic and positive attitude and being collaborative and reliable. They will be responsible for employee training, discipline, and accountability. They will lead their team to reach the established goals for the shift, while actively working with their team to find ways to improve in every aspect. They will also work closely with their direct supervisor to regularly receive feedback on their communication, leadership, performance, and decision-making to continually improve and develop their leadership skills. This is an appointed position and the employee's ability to stay in this role will be based on their performance.

Responsibilities
  • * Build and lead a team which demonstrates a safety-first culture.
  • * Supervise all production activities for assigned shift, including scheduling shift employees and crewing machines to cover vacations and absences, while controlling overtime spend.
  • * Administer progressive coaching and disciplinary action to course-correct undesirable behavior/results.
  • * Be an active participant on Safety, Quality, SPS, and other project-specific teams.
  • * Keep accurate and up-to-date records on production, training, and employee relations.
  • * Be highly adaptable and able to work across various teams and within different layers of the organization.

Requirements & Selection process
  • * Employees that have demonstrated the ability and desire to grow and go above and beyond through their past leadership accomplishments, project completion, and safety team/pillar team involvement, etc.
  • * Must possess a high degree of understanding lean principles and demonstrate the use of those principles in driving continuous improvement.
  • * Demonstrate the ability and willingness to train, mentor, and build their team members.
  • * Past performance and personal record will be considered.
  • * Candidates may be recruited within Sonoco or externally.
  • * Leadership team will interview candidates that meet the criteria for this position.
  • * Prior leadership experience required - education and prior work experience may be considered in leu of direct leadership experience.
  • * Bachelor's degree is required OR be actively seeking a degree.

Requirements to Maintain Hourly Supervisor Status
  • * Must meet expectations outlined in their performance reviews.
  • * Hourly supervisors are reviewed semi-annually by the Production Manager and/or Plant Manager.
  • * Actively pursuing Bachelor or Associates degree.
  • * Must attend Sonoco's Leadership training.
  • * Must maintain flexible schedule to work days or nights, depending on the plant's needs, and must be able to fill in for vacations, as needed.
